Life of Foraging

When I forage, I remind myself that that is one of the key times that I feel connected with our Planet. My mind, body and soul seem to be at peace. Foraging reminds me of what most of us have lost throughout time. The power coming out of our Planet, with ability to heal and feed us, and as Paul Stamens would say, sometimes the potential to kill us. Not everything out there is for us, as in life in general.

My walks for foraging are primarily contained to hour long drives to and from the location as, again, time is scarce now-a-days. But even in the little patches scattered across our region, some delicious and nutritious finds can pop up and a meal would get that much of a boost of a healthy ingredient.

Yesterday’s walk, we thought we found a patch of worthiness but sadly, somebody was there before and took off plenty for themselves. I am hoping that this patch blessed a few dinner tables as it seemed like a big find for whoever found it. When I find a patch, I only forage what I need for my ingredients of the day. I leave the rest for the wildlife and nature, and the possible next Forager. The key about our environment and planet, is to share. We need to be happy with enough. The waste troubles that many regions have today is because of the concept that we always want and think we need, more, more and more. But we do not.

I went back to check up on her this morning but because of the weather she only grew half an inch. I’ll be going back tomorrow to check up on her. Oh and by the way, this is a Chicken of the Woods in Windsor-Essex region of Southern, Ontario, the next door neighbour of Detroit, Michigan.
